How to thaw frozen meat correctly

Many busy people and families couldn’t go without their freezers. After a long day, dinner can be as simple as pulling some packets out of the freezer to heat up in the oven or microwave. While this method is great for frozen veg and ready meals, does the same go for frozen meat?

How to Thaw Frozen Meat the Right Way?

Meat must be kept at a safe temperature while it’s thawing out which is why you should never thaw frozen meat by running it under hot water or by leaving it out on the counter all day. Doing either of these methods can leave you with meat that’s teeming with harmful bacteria.

  • Refrigerator Thawing: The ideal way to thaw frozen meat is by placing it in the refrigerator where it can stay at a constant, safe temperature. This method is more time-consuming but will yield the best results. You’ll need to allow 10-12 hours of thawing time per kilogram of meat.

Food that has been thawed in the refrigerator is best cooked right away, but it should keep for another day or two if you aren’t ready to cook it yet.

  • Cold Water Thawing: Thawing meat with cold water is faster than refrigerator thawing but needs more of your attention. You’ll need a leak-proof plastic bag to prevent water and bacteria from getting in. The bag will need to stay submerged in cold tap water, with the water changed out every half hour or so. You’ll need about 1hr for every kg of meat and will have to cook it once it’s thawed.

  • Microwave Thawing: Many people opt for this method because of how easy it is. Most microwaves will have a defrost or thaw setting that you can use for thawing meat. You’ll need about 8-10 minutes per pound of meat. Cook the meat immediately afterward as it may have started to cook in the microwave.
