Meat Mogul Tariq Sheikh: Championing British Meat on the Global Stage
Published Date: April 2024

Tariq Sheikh’s journey is one defined by vision, resilience, and an unwavering belief in the quality of British meat. From humble beginnings to becoming a leading figure in the halal meat industry, his story reflects not only personal success but the rise of British-sourced halal meat on the global culinary stage.
Born in Pakistan in October 1961, Tariq Sheikh moved to the United Kingdom at the age of four. Growing up in Britain would shape both his identity and his entrepreneurial outlook, laying the foundations for a lifelong commitment to excellence, innovation, and leadership.
His career began in the fast-food sector, where he demonstrated exceptional drive and capability from a young age. By 19, Sheikh had risen to the role of area manager, overseeing a growing chain and gaining invaluable experience in operations, customer service, and quality control. Yet, it was his entrepreneurial instinct that ultimately set him on a different path.
In his thirties, Sheikh founded Tariq Halal Meat with a bold ambition: to modernise the traditional halal butcher and elevate the entire retail experience. At a time when many halal meat shops lacked consistency and presentation, he envisioned something radically different, i.e., premium, five-star retail environments that matched the standards of high-end food businesses.
“I had seen many butcher shops in my time, and it became clear that halal butchery needed to evolve alongside other modern retailers,” Sheikh reflected. “Customers deserved an experience that reflected both quality and pride.”
That vision became reality. Today, Tariq Halal operates over 30 stores and has played a pivotal role in positioning British meat as a premium product internationally. The brand’s growth has been driven not just by scale, but by its commitment to freshness, traceability, and ethical sourcing. These are the values that Sheikh believes set British meat apart from frozen imports common in other global markets.
His efforts have also helped introduce British-sourced halal meat to regions such as the Gulf, where demand for high-quality halal products continues to grow. Sheikh has long championed the freshness of British meat, seeing it as a key differentiator in international markets.
Despite global success, Sheikh remains deeply rooted in Britain. A proud Anglophile and Royalist, he openly credits the UK for providing the opportunities that shaped his career.
“I see myself as a British success story,” he has said. “This country rewards hard work and leadership, and I owe my success to that.”
Beyond business, philanthropy plays a central role in Sheikh’s life. He actively supports organisations including the Prince of Wales’s British Asian Trust, the British Heart Foundation, and the Cancer Foundation, and has established a not-for-profit foundation to uplift others and “send the elevator back down.”
Tariq Sheikh’s journey is more than a business success; it is a testament to how passion, innovation, and purpose can transform an entire industry, placing British halal meat firmly on the global map.
